Renewable Energy - Wind

Renewable energy is environmentally-friendly energy on the green concept. As a result, wind energy has developed into a significant market across the world. Wind energy plays an important role in globally operating LAPP. To reflect the importance of this sector, the SBU Wind (Strategic Business Unit Wind) has been set up, specializing in products and services for the sector.

Wind energy is the quickest growing market globally amongst renewable energies. New wind farms are being developed on every continent. They will increasingly replace energy provision from fossil fuels and thus provide a crucial environmental contribution.

LAPP Cabling Solutions For Wind Applications

Requirements for cabling solutions in wind applications: Talking about a wind turbine, also often called wind power station, windmill or wind generator, you imagine a tower with 3 blades mounted on a nacelle, which can turn with the wind direction. Almost all large wind turbines have the same design of horizontal axis wind turbine having an upwind rotor with three blades, attached to a nacelle on top of a tall tubular tower.

The nacelle contains among electrics, electronics other important components like the main bearing, main shaft, (opt. gearbox), brake, and generator. Inside the nacelle is where most of the action takes place, where motion is turned into electricity. With the wind, the nacelle will turn max. 3 times in the same direction bevor it will be automatically stopped for turning back slowly. So the installed cables which connect the bottom control cabinet with the nacelle have to pass a so-called "drip loop" and the cables have to endure torsion angles up to a max. of +/- 150deg/mtr.

Activity of Components In Wind Turbines

The components within turbines must withstand extreme temperature changes, corrosive oils, and high levels of stress and vibration. Subsystems that fail can cause unscheduled downtime and drops in productivity, both leading to a severe negative impact on your bottom line.

LAPP group’s cables, connectors, cable glands, and custom cable assemblies for power, data/signal, and control applications have proven to be more than a match for the demands of today’s wind farms. These products we talk about torsion, cold, heat resistant, flame retardant, and halogen free cables for power and control application. Control cabinet single cores, data communication, and optical transmission cabling solution.

Additional LAPP group components have been field proven to withstand temperature extremes, hydraulic fluids, corrosive oils, and the vibration and torsion stress. Namely vibration resistant protective cable conduit systems, Industrial connectors, cable glands, and cable marking systems.

Global Demand for LAPP Products

Due to very various climatic conditions in locations such as Asia or Europe and specific technical requirements, the demands on wires, cable glands, cables, and connectors regarding temperature resistance, vibration resistance, and torsional stability are extremely high. Many of the installed parts have to demonstrate their reliable functionality in a temperature range of -40 to +90°C over a number of years. Basically, individual products of all LAPP brands are required. Also ready-made products from LAPP systems.

Quality is constantly being ensured in our own highly-modern test centers and internationally. At UI LAPP, we have a climate controlled torsion test chamber.. The composition of the group with its own in-house production in the main markets gives our international customers the security of being able to access a large assortment of standard products with the corresponding standards all over the world.

LAPP can fall back on its extensive experience over 50 years of development and manufacturing, and based on this has developed various innovations and a high level of production quality and reliability.
