Protective cable conduit systems and cable carrier systems
PROTECTIVE CABLE CONDUIT SYSTEMS (commonly known as CONDUITS or CABLE TRUNKING) are hoses or tubes used for protecting or routing electrical cables within a building (or facility), between machines or even within a machine. Conduits provide mechanical, chemical or thermal protection. Sometimes, a conduit is used when the cable is not sufficiently robust for the installation due to the quality of cheaper cables or simply to improve the aesthetics and organisation of laying the cables neatly.
Materials used for conduits are plastic, metal (galvanized steel or stainless steel), rubber or mixed material depending on the protection required. It may also come in various styles of constructions such as corrugated or integrated PVC spiral or spring steel wire for extra mechanical strength or braided sleeve for flexibility or metal conduit with a PVC outer sheath for corrosion protection. Conduits fittings come in different screw thread standard and sizes as well as types that provide strain relief and different levels of IP protection.
Application specific conduits such as liquid tight (or water tight) conduits protects the cable inside from liquid damage.
Industry specific conduits for railway or food and beverage may require special approvals or testing.
To facilitate the installation, coupling or mounting of conduits, specific tools and accessories are available.
