2025 may be the year that the clean energy sector undergoes a significant transformation, steering more efficient energy production while continuously reducing carbon emissions. Despite existing challenges such as geopolitical tensions and harsh weather conditions in certain parts of the world, global commitments to adopting clean technologies (cleantech) remain unwavered.
Solar, wind, hydrogen, and energy storage systems (ESS) continue to be the core pillars of cleantech, shaping the global blueprint, each offering sustainable solutions to different needs within the power grid.
But, which of these technologies will capture the attention of investors in the evolving field of clean energy?

Cleantech Investments
A comprehensive report from a world-renowned credit-rating agency provides an analysis of global investments in cleantech1, revealing a remarkable overall spending of approximately USD 670 billion on all related renewable energies and energy storage.
Solar photovoltaics (PV) dominates more than half of the total investments, followed by wind power, which claims nearly a third, primarily from onshore installations over offshore. Energy storage installations are also gaining momentum, securing another USD 60 billion in funding1.
Together, these three technologies—solar PV, wind power and energy storage—make up at least 96% of all cleantech investments.

Latest Trends in Battery ESS
About five years ago, the energy storage market was relatively unknown to many. However, it has since been poised for significant growth and innovation, driven by an increasing need for grid stability. With more emerging trends in energy storage in the recent year, it enabled this sector to improve its existing solutions, enhancing the suitability of supplying reliable electricity at the right place and time.

Grid-Scale Energy Storage
The demand for large-scale battery ESS is on a steady rise, particularly in the United States. Regulatory initiatives such as FERC Order No. 2023, further streamlines the interconnection process for energy storage systems.

Advanced Battery Technologies
The industry is moving beyond traditional lithium-ion batteries towards more advanced solutions, including lithium-polymer batteries, which offer increased efficiency and safety. Additionally, there's a growing focus on lithium alternatives such as sodium-sulphur, zinc-air, and nickel-zinc batteries, offering improved sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES)
Reliability and resilience have become priorities as the grid infrastructure evolves, driving a surge in technologies such as flow batteries and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES), capable of storing energy for 10 hours or more, addressing the need for extended storage durations.
Meanwhile, lithium-ion technology is also advancing, now being integrated into battery ESS which sustains up to eight hours of storage — a significant leap from the traditional 4–6-hour duration.

Battery Cost Changes
In the last two years, battery cell prices have declined by an average of 25%. This price shift is largely due to intensified competition within the battery ESS market, coupled with an oversupply observed during the same period, pushing down the overall costs of batteries used internally.
