Electric cars have become a common means of transport in the last a few years. Demand will continue to grow, and a good charging station network will be necessary to further improve the usability of electric cars.
Data communication between the components of modern charging stations is necessary to control the charging process. Charging posts are connected to the main control cabinet. This control cabinet adjusts the charging current according to the battery level and the applicable power to protect the battery and guarantee an optimal charging process. It also processes payments via card, user account or smartphone, monitors errors, and eventually ensures a communication with the service desk, if necessary.
Alternating Current increases the need for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and may affect data transmission via common metallic data cables. Therefore, fibre optic (FO) cables are preferred for the data transmission in this application.
