Riding the
Semiconductor Revolution
Insights & Innovations
Standing on the cusp of a new era, the highly cyclical semiconductor industry had gone through its ups and downs with seemingly shorter bursts observed in the last 2 decades. The complex interplay of geopolitical, economic, environmental, and technological factors makes it challenging to foresee how drivers will affect traditional boom-bust cycles amid the shifting market.
As reported by the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA)1, global semiconductor industry sales revenue amounted to USD526.8 billion in 2023, a decrease of 8.2% compared to 2022 figures. Despite an overall downturn, several bright spots signal a robust turnaround in 2024 as the growth of next-gen technologies looks set to push the industry into new heights, mainly due to its technological advancement in high bandwidth memory (HBM) and transformation due to the impact of Generative AI development.
Discover what's next and explore
3 Key Semiconductor Industry Trends:
Generative AI chips to drive emerging opportunities & industry innovation
Back-end semiconductor manufacturing to increase prominence in value chain
Semiconductor manufacturing to become "smarter" and "more efficient"
1.
Generative AI chips touted
for the next boom

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is defined as “algorithms that are used to generate new content such as text, audio, video, animation, or even DNA, through its exposure in huge amounts of data to locate or link patterns and relationships2”. As semiconductor products that offer machine learning and similar algorithms, most of these highly valuable chipsets are located in data centers, driving processes through the hardware that consists mainly of CPUs and GPUs in special packaging.

"As more sophisticated equipment is needed within the Semiconductor value chain to manufacture these chips, with our internal analysis, we would estimate about USD4 billion worth of assets to be added in CAPEX globally till year 2027 to support the growth of Generative AI", opined Boon Hong Lee, Strategic Marketing Manager in LAPP Asia Pacific, who added that investments are surely required to ensure the sustainability in the production processes, especially within the back-end manufacturing.

2.
Back-end manufacturing
becomes vital in the growth equation

Packaging, assembly and testing processes are part of the final mile to deliver complete semiconductor products; and advanced packaging processes are integral to any chip player in the manufacturing of complex and sophisticated chips, including Generative AI ones. With an exception of the Integrated Design Manufacturers (IDMs), almost all other chip manufacturers rely on third party Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly & Test (OSATs). Even as the United States and Europe look to attract more of these back-end manufacturing facilities into their regions through government incentives, with three Chinese and six Taiwan companies in the top 10 rankings3, Asia is set to dominate in back-end manufacturing with a commanding 90% market share.

3.
Smarter, more efficient manufacturing
in semiconductor industry

Taking the variability out of manufacturing by providing the right information at the right time, Internet-of-Things (IoT), machine learning and robotics are concepts that have been used by wafer fabs, IDMs and OSATs to improve quality and increase vital production output.

"Smart Manufacturing", a key phrase refers here to the evolving landscape of the manufacturing technologies, as game-changing Generative AI enters the fray. Process engineers would now be able to generate more accurate sets of new settings for their machines to invoke smarter self-diagnostics and predictive maintenance of the equipment, while semiconductor facilities explore areas such as facility management and energy efficiency, to reduce overall costs of running the plants.
